WHY WHATSAPP ISN’T EARNING YET

Your Customers Live on WhatsApp. Your Brand Doesn’t.

WhatsApp marketing is effectively an ex-US channel: Meta has paused all marketing messages to US phone numbers since April 2025. That splits the market - US-facing agencies are structurally locked out, and the brands winning on WhatsApp are the ones selling where it actually works. If that’s you and the channel still isn’t earning, it’s usually one of these.

PROBLEM 01▲ LEAK

Your UK and EU customers live on WhatsApp. You send them nothing.

The app your European customers open twenty times a day has no message from your brand in it. Email fights a crowded inbox, texting barely registers there - and the one channel they actually answer is silent.

PROBLEM 02▲ LEAK

You bolted on a WhatsApp tool that can’t see your Klaviyo data.

A separate SaaS means segments rebuilt by hand, suppressions that don’t sync, and two attribution models claiming the same order. A channel that can’t see your customer data can’t do retention.

PROBLEM 03▲ LEAK

You tried broadcasts, got throttled, and concluded WhatsApp doesn’t work.

Meta scores every template and squeezes senders whose messages get ignored or reported. Blast the way you blast email and the channel shuts itself off. That isn’t WhatsApp failing - it’s WhatsApp working as designed.

PROBLEM 04▲ LEAK

Nobody can tell you what a message actually costs.

Since Meta’s July 2025 pricing change, you pay per delivered template - by category, by country. Marketing to Germany, utility to Spain, a service reply in the free 24-hour window: three different invoices. If your team can’t map that, they can’t plan the channel.

PROBLEM 05▲ LEAK

Your SMS playbook flopped in Europe - because Europe doesn’t text.

North America runs on text messages. The UK, EU, and Latin America run on WhatsApp. Porting a US text calendar onto a European list isn’t a strategy; it’s a geography mistake.

PROBLEM 06▲ LEAK

Your subscription has churn-save and dunning problems WhatsApp could fix.

Upcoming-charge reminders, skip-a-month saves, failed-payment recovery - the conversations subscribers will actually have on WhatsApp. Almost no one has built these flows. That includes your current agency.

WHAT WE DO

WhatsApp Marketing, Run Where Your Revenue Lives: Inside Klaviyo.

Every WhatsApp vendor wants to be your second platform. We don’t install one. WhatsApp has been native in Klaviyo since September 2025 - campaigns and flows on the same canvas as the rest of your retention program - so channels take turns instead of piling on. One customer profile, one flow canvas, one attribution model, and one revenue system to hold it all.

INPUT 01I

WhatsApp Flows in Klaviyo

Welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, winback - built as WhatsApp steps inside your existing Klaviyo flows and orchestrated against email and SMS, so every customer gets the channel they answer instead of all three at once.

INPUT 02II

Subscription Retention Flows

The category nobody else has built: churn-save intercepts, upcoming-charge reminders, skip-a-month and swap flows, failed-payment recovery on utility templates, replenishment nudges. Two-way conversations at the exact moments subscribers decide to stay - the discipline behind Frøya’s 33% churn reduction, now on a channel customers reply to.

INPUT 03III

Compliance, Opt-in & Cost Control

GDPR-clean consent mechanics and instant opt-out, template-category strategy - marketing vs utility vs service, with the free 24-hour service window doing the heavy lifting - and per-country cost planning, so you know what a message earns before it sends.

Your Free Audit Is a Complete Gameplan, Not a Sales Call.

Most agencies sign you, then disappear for eight weeks to “audit” before they tell you anything. We do the opposite. Before you pay a cent - before you even decide - you get a full teardown of your account and the exact plan to fix it, built from your real numbers. Here’s what lands in your inbox.

01
UNIT ECONOMICS

A Full Unit Economics Analysis

We pull your real numbers from Shopify and Klaviyo - margins, breakeven, retention order by order, and the most you can spend to acquire a customer without losing money. You see exactly where the business makes money and where it leaks.

02
GROWTH LEVERS

Every Growth Lever, Mapped

The full set of levers that move LTV - converting one-time buyers to subscription, cutting voluntary and failed-payment churn, reactivating cancellers, lifting subscription AOV. You see which ones actually move the needle.

03
SCORECARD

A Prioritized Lifecycle Scorecard

A flow-by-flow benchmark of your current program - what’s working, what’s broken, what’s missing - scored against brands like yours and ranked by revenue impact. A number, and a reason.

04
THE GAMEPLAN

The Complete Gameplan

One prioritized roadmap - which flows to fix, kill, or build, which subscriber segments to split out, and which subscription levers to pull, in order, with targets and trajectory. Not a 40-page deck. A plan you can start tomorrow.

All built from your live Klaviyo, Shopify, and subscription data - never a template.

FAQ

WhatsApp Marketing Questions, Answered.

Can I send WhatsApp marketing messages to customers in the US?
No. Meta paused all marketing-template messages to US phone numbers on April 1, 2025, and as of mid-2026 the pause is still in force with no announced end date. Any agency selling you US WhatsApp marketing is selling something Meta switched off. What still works in the US: utility messages like order updates, service conversations in the free 24-hour reply window, and click-to-WhatsApp ads. For US marketing lists, the answer is SMS. WhatsApp is where your UK, EU, and LatAm revenue is.
Does Klaviyo support WhatsApp marketing?
Yes - natively, since September 24, 2025. Campaigns and flows on the same canvas as your email and SMS, with marketing, utility, and service templates, live conversations through Klaviyo Inbox, and product catalogs and carousels in-message. No third-party connector, no separate login: one customer profile, one flow canvas, one attribution model. That’s the entire reason our WhatsApp programs report revenue you can trust.
How much does WhatsApp marketing cost per message?
You pay Meta per delivered template, priced by message category and recipient country - conversation-based pricing was deprecated in July 2025. Marketing templates cost the most, utility less, and replies inside the 24-hour service window are free - which makes template-category strategy a cost lever, not paperwork. Klaviyo bills it through the same Mobile Messaging plan as SMS and shows your exact per-country rates inside your account; we’ll walk through yours on the call.
Is WhatsApp marketing legal under GDPR - do customers have to opt in?
Legal, and yes - explicit opt-in, the same standard as email and SMS. That isn’t the obstacle; it’s the moat. A WhatsApp list is smaller and harder to build than an email list, and it behaves accordingly: for Jimmy Joy, under 5% of the marketing list drove nearly 30% of BFCM Klaviyo-attributed revenue. We build the consent mechanics - checkout, popups, dynamic email blocks - and instant opt-out handling, so the list is an asset, not a liability.
WhatsApp vs SMS: which is better for ecommerce brands?
Geography decides, not preference. North America texts - and Meta has paused US WhatsApp marketing anyway - so US-heavy lists belong on SMS. The UK, EU, and Latin America live on WhatsApp, where text-message marketing barely registers. If your list spans both, that’s exactly what Klaviyo’s shared canvas is for: one flow, with each customer routed to the channel they actually answer.
What open and click rates does WhatsApp actually get?
Here are ours, from Klaviyo’s published case study of our client Jimmy Joy: open rates between 60% and 90%, click-through rates above 22%, and a BFCM campaign that returned 78x ROI. You’ll see vendors quote 98% opens and 40-60% clicks; those numbers come from companies selling WhatsApp software, and no independent benchmark backs them. Judge the channel on attributed revenue per send instead - it’s the only number that compounds.
How do I get customers to opt in to WhatsApp?
The same surfaces that build your SMS list, tuned for a higher-trust channel: checkout consent, targeted popups for high-LTV segments, dynamic blocks inside your emails, and click-to-WhatsApp entry points where one tap starts the conversation. The lever is exclusivity - as our strategist Bobi Jonceski put it in Klaviyo’s case study, ‘When used correctly, WhatsApp amplifies exclusivity better than any other channel.’ Early access and subscriber-only offers give customers a reason to add your brand to the app they use for friends.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API, or is the free app enough?
The free WhatsApp Business app is a phone with a company profile - fine for a founder answering questions at fifty orders a month, useless for segmentation, automation, or a second team member. Marketing at DTC scale runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform, the API - which is exactly what Klaviyo’s integration gives you, without operating a separate tool to get it. Meta keeps building on the same rails - the AI sales agents TechRound covered in June 2026, in a piece that names YOCTO, run on the Business Platform too.
Can WhatsApp recover abandoned carts?
Yes - it’s one of the highest-intent plays on the channel: a message with the product card, a real reply window, and a conversation instead of a countdown timer. We build it as a cross-channel abandonment flow in Klaviyo, so WhatsApp and email take turns rather than piling on. One thing we won’t do is promise the ‘60% cart recovery’ stat floating around - it comes from a tool vendor’s own study. We’d rather show you attributed recovery revenue in your own Klaviyo dashboard.
Will marketing on WhatsApp get my brand blocked?
Only if you run it like a blast channel. Meta scores every template and every sender; when messages get ignored, reported, or blocked, your rate limits shrink and delivery throttles. That’s not a bug - it’s the channel enforcing quality. The defense is the strategy itself: tight segments, capped frequency, utility templates doing utility work, and messages a customer would miss if they stopped arriving. Retention discipline, in other words - which is the product.
