The 8 Best Retention Marketing Tools for Ecommerce Brands (2026)

The YOCTO editorial team is in-house lifecycle strategists, email and SMS specialists, and Klaviyo-certified operators behind every article on this site. YOCTO’s client work has been published by Klaviyo, Skio and Loop under their own names, and its retention methodology - the LTV Parthenon - is published in Forbes. Klaviyo Elite Master, 2025-2026.

Retention marketing tools do not retain customers by themselves. Customers stay because of the system built around the tools. The tools still set the ceiling. Every layer of retention - email, subscriptions, loyalty, direct mail, identity, measurement - has one platform that does the job better than its alternatives, and a weak choice at any layer limits everything built on top of it.

This is the stack YOCTO runs every day, across a portfolio of DTC and subscription brands doing $500+ million a year. Six of the eight platforms on this list have published case studies about our client work under their own names. That was the standard for inclusion: if we cannot prove a tool's impact, we do not recommend it.

How Do We Know These Are the Best Retention Marketing Tools?

We work with them every day. YOCTO manages retention for dozens of brands, and these platforms are where that work happens. We held Klaviyo Elite Master status (2025-2026), the top tier of the program, and are a Platinum-tier Loop Subscriptions partner, Gold with Opensend, and an active partner of every other company here. Six of the eight companies on this list have published case studies about our client work, on their own websites, under their own names.

Nobody paid for placement, and no company made the list on a partnership alone. In every case the results came first and the partnership followed.

01 · The retention core

Klaviyo

Klaviyo now calls itself a B2C CRM, and the label fits. It outgrew "email tool" years ago. The core asset is the data layer: every order, click, quiz answer, and subscription event lives on a single customer profile, fed by more than 350 integrations. That structure lets us run a client's entire stack in one place, and it makes migrations survivable. When we move a brand from one subscription platform to another, the history and the automations stay in Klaviyo instead of disappearing with the old app. The feature set keeps growing: scheduled flows and popups, content personalized to the profile, AI for subject lines, segments, and predictive analytics. What we value most is reliability. Klaviyo processes billions of events a day and the sends go out, which anyone who has watched a smaller ESP fail during Black Friday week will not take for granted.

Klaviyo published its own case study on our work for Mira, whose email revenue grew 252% in six months across five active geographies. On the same platform, we have taken ColonBroom to a peak of $1 million a week in email revenue on last-click attribution and grown Healf's monthly email revenue five times over.

Best For

Any DTC brand past its first thousand customers. Klaviyo is the layer the rest of this list plugs into, which makes it the first decision and the one that keeps the stack open.

Klaviyo at a Glance

  • B2C CRM: email, SMS, RCS, WhatsApp, mobile push, reviews, and a customer data platform in one
  • 350+ pre-built integrations; 205,000+ paying customers across 100+ countries
  • AI for subject lines, segmentation, and predictive analytics
  • Our relationship: Klaviyo Elite Partner, the top tier of the program
02 · Subscriptions

Loop Subscriptions

Most subscription apps manage subscriptions. Loop is built to grow them. The platform, which powers thousands of Shopify subscription brands, treats the subscription as something to optimize rather than configure once, and it gives teams that are good at acquisition detailed control over what happens after the first order. Two features stand out. Streaks unlocks rewards only when a subscriber's orders land inside set windows, which pulls orders forward and shortens payback time. Mystery gifts, as we configure them, require the customer to opt in to a surprise instead of receiving a default discount. Subscribers who opt in cancel at lower rates, and for those who still head for the exit, Loop's cancellation flows offer several stages of treatment instead of a single goodbye screen.

Loop has published its own account of our Evereden program: 8x growth in subscriber acquisition over three months. We handle migrations onto Loop as well. When MiraCare migrated with us, churn improved 13.9% through the transition.

Loop was built for businesses where the subscription is the business, not a checkbox at checkout. Our partnership with YOCTO is what happens when that product meets a team that knows how to run it. Together we are helping brands grow what happens after the first order, and on Evereden that was 8x subscriber acquisition growth in three months.

Sakshi JainChief Growth Officer, Loop Subscriptions

Best For

Shopify subscription brands where acquisition is already working and the next dollar has to come from payback speed, order frequency, and saved cancellations.

Loop Subscriptions at a Glance

  • Subscription management for Shopify: customer portal, bundles, failed-payment recovery, automated flows
  • Retention mechanics we deploy: Streaks, opt-in mystery gifts, multi-stage cancellation flows
  • Thousands of Shopify subscription brands on platform
  • Our relationship: Platinum-tier Loop partner
03 · Offline reach

Paper Run

Direct mail has a measurement problem. The typical program reports a large attributed number after a large send, and nobody can say what changed. Paper Run is a managed service that triggers physical mail from your existing customer data - lapsed buyers your emails no longer reach, high-intent customers who keep declining to subscribe - and it maintains a holdout group on every campaign, so the results reflect what the mail moved compared with what would have happened anyway. Few direct mail vendors submit to that level of scrutiny.

Our joint program for Gratsi produced a 5.2x incremental ROAS measured against the holdout, along with a 9% lift in upsell-to-subscription conversions. Paper Run published the full case study, methodology included.

Best For

Brands with a mature email program and a growing pool of unreachables: lapsed customers, suppressed addresses, and inbox-fatigued segments a postcard can still reach.

Paper Run at a Glance

  • Automated direct mail triggered from your ecommerce and email data, integrated with Klaviyo
  • Managed service: strategy, setup, and send operations handled for you
  • Holdout groups standard, so impact is reported as incremental rather than attributed
  • Our relationship: co-published case study on Gratsi
04 · Loyalty

Bubblehouse

Loyalty software is a crowded category, and most of it amounts to a points calculator with a widget. Bubblehouse operates at a different scale. Its customers include Mattel, Old Spice, American Girl, and MaryRuth Organics, and it serves them the way an agency would, with strategic input on program design rather than a setup call and a handoff. That matters because loyalty programs usually fail on design rather than software: earn rates that do not add up, rewards nobody wants, tiers that flatter members instead of motivating them. Bubblehouse's team has seen enough programs at enterprise scale to catch those mistakes before launch. The platform also passes its triggers and customer properties into Klaviyo natively, so the loyalty program lives inside your lifecycle marketing, where the revenue is generated.

When we rebuilt Boujee Hippie's program on Bubblehouse, member lifetime value rose 51%, repeat purchase rate rose 35%, and the program returned 16x its cost. Bubblehouse published the case study. If you are weighing this layer specifically, we have written a longer shortlist of the best loyalty and rewards platforms.

We design the loyalty system; YOCTO decides how customers hear about it. Their team knows email and SMS at a depth we rarely encounter, and on Boujee Hippie they implemented the flows while we set the earn rates, tiers, and rewards. Member LTV rose 51%.

Brian MaoCo-founder, Bubblehouse

Best For

Scaled brands that have outgrown plug-and-play loyalty apps and want a program designed rather than installed.

Bubblehouse at a Glance

  • Loyalty and rewards: points, tiers, referrals, gamified achievements, subscription loyalty, omnichannel
  • Counts Mattel, Old Spice, American Girl and MaryRuth Organics among its brands
  • Concierge-style service, including strategic program design
  • Our relationship: co-published case study on Boujee Hippie
05 · Measurement

Triple Whale

We have argued publicly that single-touch attribution flatters channels and misleads founders, so an analytics platform had to clear a high bar for this list. Triple Whale clears it by running marketing mix modeling, multi-touch attribution, and incrementality testing side by side in one measurement suite. Its larger value is visibility: ads, email, subscriptions, lifetime value, your site, and more on one screen, so cross-channel decisions are made from the same numbers. Moby, the platform's AI operator, acts in your ad accounts, builds creative, writes email campaigns, and generates landing pages. Sonar, its data-enrichment layer, recovers traffic and signals that standard pixels miss and returns them to your email and ad platforms to trigger more flows and sharpen ad targeting.

We run Triple Whale across many of our highest-profile clients, including The Sprouting Company and Gratsi. It has become the screen retention decisions are made on.

Retention is such an important use case for Triple Whale because we help marketers understand the true impact of what they are doing, not just what their email platform says it drove. Moby, our AI operator, can spot a high-value cohort that is starting to lapse and create a win-back campaign for it without you even asking. Add Sonar Send to trigger more flows, plus LTV and cohort analysis to deeply understand your customers, and retention teams can go from seeing the opportunity to acting on it immediately.

Anthony DelPizzoVP of Marketing, Triple Whale

Best For

Brands spending across three or more channels that want profitability, lifetime value, and channel performance answered in one place.

Triple Whale at a Glance

  • Analytics operating system for ecommerce, combining marketing mix modeling, multi-touch attribution and incrementality testing in one measurement suite
  • Moby: an AI operator that automates profitability and performance reporting and builds email campaigns
  • Sonar: first-party signal capture that standard pixels miss, fed back to flows and ad platforms
  • 650,000 brands on platform, processing 9+ billion events daily
06 · Audience capture

Opensend

Your flows make money only from people you are allowed to email, and by Opensend's own research most ecommerce traffic never identifies itself. Opensend works on that gap. It resolves anonymous visitors into new, emailable contacts who would otherwise have left the site without a trace. We consider list growth one of the most underrated retention investments, because every welcome flow, winback, and campaign downstream performs in proportion to the size of the reachable audience. Opensend grows that audience without another dollar of ad spend.

Opensend published its own case study on our Evereden program, which resolved 19,565 previously anonymous visitors into contacts and produced $54,079 in attributed order value, with the identified segment opening at 57.8%. Identified visitors behave more like an audience than like cold traffic; they have already been to the store.

Our partnership with YOCTO is a great example of what happens when the right technology meets the right strategy. Together, we are helping brands turn more of their existing traffic into identifiable audiences, stronger retention, and measurable revenue.

Brad JohnstonSenior Director of Partnerships, Opensend

Best For

Brands with meaningful site traffic whose list growth has plateaued: the flows work, but the audience stopped growing.

Opensend at a Glance

  • Identity resolution: turns anonymous visitors into emailable, retargetable contacts
  • Feeds captured audiences directly into your ESP and flows
  • Case-study library across apparel, food and beverage, and consumer goods
  • Our relationship: Gold Opensend partner, co-published case study on Evereden
07 · Optimization

Maverick

Maverick is the newest partnership on this list and the fastest to pay for itself. The company made its name on AI-personalized video for ecommerce email, but the feature that won us over is the Optimizer suite, which improves inbox placement on every send. It keeps control groups running throughout, so the lift it reports is incremental rather than assumed, the same discipline Paper Run applies to mail. Setup asks little of your team: connect the account and let it test its way to more opens, clicks, and orders from the sends you were already making. Across our portfolio, Maverick has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in incremental email value. The example we cite most often is Dandelion Chocolate, where we keep volume conservative by design. Revenue grew anyway, because the emails landed in the Primary inbox.

The Promotions tab is where good emails go to die. We built Maverick to get brands out of it, and to keep a control group running so nobody has to take our word for the result.

Eitan WinerEitan WinerCEO, Maverick

Best For

High-growth brands that want more from their existing database, especially teams disciplined about frequency who would rather send smarter than send more.

Maverick at a Glance

  • AI email optimization, including inbox-placement optimization
  • AI-personalized video for ecommerce email at scale
  • Built-in A/B testing with control groups, so lift is measured as incremental
  • Our relationship: Maverick agency partner
08 · Interactive email

Zaymo

Email has always been a brochure. To act on one, the customer has to leave the inbox, land in a portal, log in, and remember why they came, and at every step some give up. Zaymo removes the trip. Its interactive emails, built with AMP and advanced HTML and sent through your existing Klaviyo setup, let customers check out, upgrade a subscription, swap a product, or leave a review inside the message. The benefit most people cite is churn, and the effect is real, since fewer portal visits mean fewer occasions to quit. Zaymo is on this list for upgrade revenue. When moving from one unit to three takes a single tap, subscribers climb the bundle ladder, and average order value and lifetime value climb with them.

Zaymo published the case study on YOCTO's work with a leading collagen brand: one-tap upgrade flows sent seven days before renewal, moving subscribers from one unit to three and from three to six, now produce more than £700K a year in upgrade revenue from what had been a silent stretch of the customer lifecycle.

Email has not changed in twenty years. For subscription brands, that usually turns into a huge revenue problem. Zaymo allows customers to upgrade, swap, or reactivate a subscription in one tap, all in the email itself. But a tool only goes as far as the operator running it. YOCTO found the silent stretch before renewal, which turned a shared client’s renewal emails into more than £700K a year in upgrade revenue. That is something not every agency is able to do.

Brice DouglasBrice DouglasCEO, Zaymo

Best For

Subscription brands whose subscribers never touch the portal, which is most of them. If your upgrade path takes more than one tap, this is the fix.

Zaymo at a Glance

  • Interactive, shoppable email: in-email checkout, subscription upgrades and swaps, reviews, surveys
  • Works through your existing ESP - build in Zaymo, send from Klaviyo
  • Used by brands like Dr. Squatch, Harry's, Grüns, and True Classic
  • Our relationship: co-published case study on subscription upgrade revenue
Which to add first

Which Tool Should You Add First?

Add them one at a time, in this order. Klaviyo comes first, because it is the layer everything else plugs into. For subscription brands, the subscription platform is the second decision, since it determines which retention mechanics are available to you, and our choice is Loop. Measurement comes third: add Triple Whale before you spend more money you cannot evaluate. After that, let the bottleneck choose the tool. If your audience has stopped growing, add Opensend. If subscribers never open the portal and never upgrade, add Zaymo. If repeat rates have gone flat at scale, add Bubblehouse. If sends are maxed out but revenue is not, add Maverick. If email can no longer reach a large share of your customers, add Paper Run.

Our Recommendation

Tools execute strategy; they do not supply it. Every platform above is the best at what it does, and none of them will choose your offer structure, design your cancellation treatments, or notice that your winback timing is off. That is operator work, and it is the work we do. YOCTO runs this stack every day, pointed at the nine numbers that decide customer lifetime value, a framework we have published as the LTV Parthenon. The results include 5x monthly email revenue for Healf, ranked #1 on the 2026 FT1000 list of Europe's fastest-growing companies; 400%+ year-over-year email revenue growth for BetterMe; a peak of $1 million a week from email for ColonBroom; and six of the eight platforms on this page publishing our client work under their own names. If you want to know which layer of your retention stack is leaking, the subscription diagnostic is free, and it will tell you before you commit to anything. The rest of the evidence is in our case studies.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you recommend these platforms?

Because we use them daily, and our own results depend on them. YOCTO manages retention for DTC and subscription brands doing $5 million to $150 million a year, and this is the stack that work runs on. We held Klaviyo's Elite tier in 2025-2026 and hold Platinum with Loop, and Gold with Opensend, with active partnerships across the rest of the list, and six of the eight companies here have published case studies on our client work under their own names. Nothing on this page is a paid placement, and no tool earned its spot through a partnership; the results came first. If your bottleneck is the operator rather than the tools, we have written shortlists for that as well: the best agencies for subscription brands and the best Klaviyo Elite partner agencies.

What are retention marketing tools?

Software that grows revenue from the customers you already have. The category covers six jobs: the email and SMS core (Klaviyo), subscription management (Loop), loyalty (Bubblehouse), offline reach (Paper Run), audience capture (Opensend), and the optimization and measurement layers that keep the rest honest (Maverick, Zaymo, Triple Whale).

Do you need all eight?

No. Most brands need Klaviyo plus one or two others, chosen by bottleneck, and adding tools before the strategy is settled automates the wrong decisions faster. For most brands under $5 million, the list is Klaviyo, a subscription platform if revenue is recurring, and nothing else until the measurement argues otherwise.

How do you know if a retention tool is actually working?

The revenue figure on a tool's own dashboard will not tell you, because every tool grades its own homework generously. The clean test is incrementality: hold out a group, run the tool for everyone else, and compare. Several tools on this list volunteer for that test. Paper Run reports against holdouts, Maverick builds control groups into every send, and Triple Whale sells incrementality testing as a product.

What are the best retention tools for subscription brands specifically?

Start with three: Loop as the subscription platform, Zaymo for one-tap upgrades and plan changes inside the inbox, and Klaviyo running the lifecycle messaging around both. Together they cover the three moments where subscription revenue is won or lost: the offer, the renewal window, and the cancellation flow. It is the same combination we deploy as a subscription marketing agency.

Do these tools work together?

Yes, and that is part of why these eight made the list. Klaviyo sits at the center: Opensend feeds it new contacts, Bubblehouse passes loyalty triggers and properties into it, Zaymo builds interactive emails that send through it, Paper Run triggers mail from its segments, and Triple Whale's Sonar returns the signals your pixels missed to your flows. Eight tools share one customer profile.
